Iron Man South Africa!

Sunday we got up early to watch the Iron Man.  It is a race of 1st about 2.4 miles of swimming, 119 miles of biking and a full marathon, with deadlines on each phase of the race and an over-all time limitation of 17 hours.  So, some racers actually went from 7am until midnight.  Can you imagine!!!!  The winner finished in something like 8 hrs and 4 minutes.  I aspire to complete (I said complete, not compete- haha, finishing would be the achievement of a lifetime!) an Iron (Hu)man race at some point in my life, or at least an Olympic length triathalon (which is a much shorter “sprint” race).
We got up at 5 and were to the pier by 6 to watch the beginning of the race from a good vantage point

The swim began!

And the winners coming in for their first lap- there were two laps with a run on the beach between

I heard that it's viscous on the water being smacked in the head with arms, havin your legs pulled, and getting kicked in the face.  Now I understand why some people took their time getting into the water.  For shark purposes (haha, jk)  it's better to be in the middle, but for less impact I would much rather be on the fringes.

Those are all swimmers making the splashes out there

TONS of bikes waiting for their owners to begin the second phase

The bags are organized with the racer's gear corresponding to a number.  Taylor's favorite part is the transition when people literally jump into their shoes and just take off because they're already mostly out of their swimming gear and ready to go.

It was a day of crowds
